Understanding Clinical Waste Regulations

Clinical waste is closely regulated under the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992. It includes any product wholly or partially consisting of:

  • Human or animal tissue
  • Blood or bodily fluids
  • Excretions
  • Drugs or other pharmaceutical products
  • Paints, paint strippers, and wood treatments
  • Swabs or dressings
  • Syringes, needles, or other sharp instruments that may pose a risk if not rendered safe
  • Any waste arising from medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical, or similar practices, including investigation, treatment, teaching, or research
